ERnst Haas

  • Born: March 2, 1921

  • Died: September 12, 1986

  • When Haas was young, his interests were divided between medicine and painting. After World War ll he left both choices and chose photography.

  • Early Work: Had experimentations with abstract light and form. Did photography on Austrian returning prisoners of war. This brought Haas to LIFE magazine. At first, he declined the job offer as a staff photographer in order to keep his independence.

  • Haas moved to New York in 1951.

  • Haas traveled extensively for photography for LIFE, Vogue, and Look.

The style of Haas' photos is to take somehing simple, and turn it into something interesting. He does this by the angle of his photos, the lighting, and the color. He used expression and creativity in his photography.

  • Haas is considered one of the most celebrated and influentional photographers of the 20th century- influential for his innovations in colour photography.

  • Haas is also considered one of the pioneers of color photography.

  • He put his work in New York's museum of Modern Art.

  • Haas used colour in his images that added a sense of joy and vibrancy to familiar moments of everyday life.

  • Recieved the Hasselblad award in 1986- The Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography is an award granted to "a photographer recognized for major achievements".
