Lost Sketchbook

The idea of being “lost” can be shown through a positive and/ or negative aspect. My photo represents a negative concept of lost. It portrays how sometimes, people’s lives get too much for them to handle, so they need some form of relief. That relief in my photo was conveyed by the use of drugs. Drugs can make people seem as if they are escaping reality and becoming “lost” in another world.

My artwork illustrates the temptation a person has when drugs are right in front of them. My photo displays a boy who is conflicted between right and wrong. In one hand, he holds the drugs as if he is questioning whether it is a good idea or not. However, in the other hand, he holds the lighter like he is ready to light the drugs. I demonstrate the conflict in this poem not only with his body language, but also with his facial expression. His face depicts shame and hopelessness, which are two common feelings in drug addicts.

My artwork was inspired by a worldwide issue that is very important to me. Everyday, we hear about people dying from drug overdoses all around the world. I decided to bring that struggle to light and physically illustrate the internal conflict drug addicts face. From my photograph, I hope that others will gain a better understanding of the constant battle drug addicts face everyday.
