When you think of “home”, does sadness and hopelessness come to mind? For some people, that is all they think about. A home is a place of comfort and safeness. It’s where one has lived their whole life and grew as an individual. There can be a positive view of home, as well as a negative view. My photo represents the negative view of home. It portrays how the meaning of home to someone can quickly change in a short period of time. Examples that trigger this change are family problems, school problems, stress, loss of a loved one, etc.

My artwork illustrates the struggles a teenager faces with their family on a daily basis. In my photo, my subject is sitting outside, on the step of his house. His body language depicts sadness and shame. These are two common feelings in an teenager who suffers from emotional and verbal abuse in their home.

My artwork was inspired by a worldwide issue that is very important to me. Everyday, we hear about children from families that have gotten abused in one way or another. I decided to bring the internal struggle these children face to light in my photo. From my photograph, I hope that others will gain a better understanding of the pain these children experience on an everyday basis.
